Before you start reading this article, I’d like to clarify some things. I’ve recently received questions like “Is an iPhone an Android?” or “Is Samsung an iPhone or an Android?”. So, prior to telling you what I think are the biggest differences between iPhones and Android, which may be better for you, and which is more user-friendly, please keep in mind that.

An iPhone is not an Android device. The term “iPhone” refers solely to smartphones manufactured by Apple. All iPhones run on the iOS operating system, which Apple develops.

Android phones are not iPhones. The term “Android” used alone refers specifically to the Android operating system that’s developed by Google and powers Android devices, phones, and tablets made by a large number of manufacturers, including Motorola, OPPO, Xiaomi, Google, OnePlus, ASUS, and Nothing.

Samsung manufactures smartphones that run on the Android operating system, not iOS. Therefore, Samsung smartphones are Android devices.
Having said that, let’s move on and see which are the main differences between iPhones and Android smartphones.

Many features initially popularized by the iPhone have eventually made their way to Android devices, either in similar forms or with their own unique twists. Here’s a breakdown of some iPhone-inspired features you can now find on Android:

1. Gesture Navigation:
iPhone: Introduced swipe-based navigation with the iPhone X (e.g., swipe up to go home).
Android: Many Android phones, starting with Android 10, adopted gesture-based navigation systems.

2. Face Unlock:
iPhone: Face ID debuted with the iPhone X, offering secure facial recognition.
Android: Facial recognition was introduced earlier on Android but became more advanced and secure after Face ID’s launch.

3. Dynamic Island-like Features:
iPhone: Introduced the Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro for interactive notifications.
Android: Some Android manufacturers, like Realme and Xiaomi, have implemented similar notification interactions and overlays.

4. Animoji/Emoji Effects:
iPhone: Apple’s Animoji and Memoji enable animated avatars using facial tracking.
Android: Samsung introduced AR Emoji, while other brands added similar avatar-based features.

5. AirDrop-like Sharing:
iPhone: AirDrop allows seamless file sharing between Apple devices.
Android: Android’s Nearby Share and Samsung’s Quick Share offer similar functionality.

6. Focus Modes:
iPhone: iOS brought Focus modes to help manage notifications based on context.
Android: Digital Wellbeing and Do Not Disturb in Android offer similar focus-driven customizations.

7. Unified Ecosystem Features:
iPhone: Apple’s ecosystem allows seamless integration between devices, like Handoff, iMessage, and continuity features.
Android: Google has improved ecosystem features, like Chromebook integration, Messages for Web, and cross-device sync with Android and WearOS.

8. Camera Features:
iPhone: Popularized Portrait Mode, Deep Fusion, and Cinematic Mode.
Android: Brands like Google, Samsung, and OnePlus implemented Portrait Modes and even enhanced video with Cinematic-like features.

9. Privacy Controls:
iPhone: Privacy indicators show when apps use the mic or camera.
Android: Privacy Dashboard in Android 12+ offers similar transparency for permissions.

10. Haptic Feedback:
iPhone: Taptic Engine brought precise and subtle vibrations for user feedback.
Android: Premium Android devices have refined haptic feedback for better touch interaction.

11. Live Photos:
iPhone: Captures a few seconds of video before and after a photo.
Android: Google Photos and certain Android cameras offer Motion Photos with the same functionality.
